DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Kristi Hallisy\, PT\, DSc\, OCS\, CEEAA \n Prerequisite: Participation in Course One: TCF Adapted Program Basic Moves Training \nAPTA Approved 1.7 CEUS \nCourse Description: Participants review Optional Side Support\, Walker Support Session Type: Preconference Courses\nSession Level: Intermediate \nDescription:\nPrerequisite: proficiency in elements taught in Tai Chi Fundamentals’ Training Program: Levels 1 and 2. \nIn this course\, the speaker will review tai chi fundamentals (TCF) basic moves and TCF Short Form Part 1\, as well as its optional side support (OSS)\, walker support (WS)\, and seated (S) versions. Attendees will learn TCF Short Form Parts 2 and 3 (free-standing) and how to adapt them to all 3 versions (ie\, OSS\, WS\, S). The course will include mind/body skills training\, partner teaching practicums\, TCF applications for specific populations\, and training in sensing chi. Clinicians will learn how to apply tai chi in wellness and rehab settings. \nApplications of tai chi include balance dysfunction; orthopedic\, neurological\, and sports rehabilitation; pain management; cardiovascular and respiratory diseases; and medically complex\, chronic fatigue\, fibromyalgia\, and special populations. The speaker will discuss the use of tai chi in hospitals\, subacute facilities\, outpatient clinics\, and home care. Attendees will learn to teach TCF adapted program elements to groups of all ages\, abilities\, and fitness levels in community wellness classes\, health clubs\, tai chi and martial arts schools\, senior centers\, and long-term care facilities. \nA certificate of completion will be awarded to participants who have attended both days and have demonstrated ability to teach program elements. This course also qualifies as partial contact fulfillment hours for TCF Instructor Certification. \nLearning Objectives: Upon completion of this course\, you will be able to: \n1. Perform all Tai Chi Fundpmentals Basic Moves and Short Form with training options for optional side support\, walker support\, or seated versions. \n2. Teach basic moves and Short Form for all versions. \n3. Describe TCF’s rationale\, biomechanics\, and functional benefits. \n4. Lead centering\, breathing\, and posture awareness exercises. \n5. Apply sequence for introducing mind/body skills. \nCEU: 1.7 \nThe Tai Chi Fundamentals® Adapted Program includes instruction in three versions: Standing with Optional Side Support\, Walker Support and Seated.  An\, accessible\, adaptable program for learning tai chi\, it is suitable for individuals with a wide range of abilities and can be modified to accommodate individual needs and interests. \nProgram Elements: All movements are taught in a simple-to-complex sequence for easy learning and have been modified for practice with optional side support\, walker support and seated. All 3 versions include: \n\nBasic Moves: a series of exercises that trains postural alignment\, body mechanics and energetic components of tai chi. Designed as building blocks for learning tai chi\, they are taught in a simple-to-complex progression with discrete\, measurable increments in difficulty.\nTai Chi Fundamentals Short Form: a flowing sequence of tai chi movements based in Yang Style tai chi and adapted from the original Tai Chi Fundamentals® Form.\nMind/Body Skills Training: integrated into both Basic Moves and Short Form instruction\, fosters attention and focus\, a calm observant state of mind\, awareness of posture and breathing and physical relaxation.
